It didn't have the standard happy twists. It didn't have actually the usual happy endings.
There were so much turmoils and unrests mentioned in the book during the last 4 hours that it's hard not to forget and to forget. And devastating to know that it has been plaguing Afghanistan in the last 30 years.
It's also saddening how when placed in a certain time or place, women can literally have no rights and freedom. And what we have today in Singapore or Hong Kong cannot be taken for granted. Like how we shouldn't take for granted the food we have, the education we obtained, the right to choose our partner, the career opportunities we get, the cosmetics we wear, the clothes we put on..... For even the most talented, most educated or wealthy does not count for anything if they are deprived of the basic conditions to flourish - human rights and political stability.
Now I can understand why people make a big deal of human rights issues all around the world...
for without the appropriate and necessary external checks and balances against suppression of rights, the chances and consequences of having an extreme regime will be destructive and devastating. And the people trapped within are usually very much helpless.
